How and When to Repot Plants

Updated: Jan 13, 2022

As the foliage grows, the roots of the plant grow too. That is why plants need repotting. But how do we know when a plant needs just a bigger pot or completely new soil?

Spring has sprung and that means we can repot again! Never done? Aw.. you're not the only one! Repotting a plant is often seen as a tedious job, or even completely forgotten when taking care of our green friends. However, we recommend that you do this now and then because this ensures that your favourite amigo stays fresh and fruity! Why? Read on and learn how to repot your plants.

Why?

Most plants grow nice and fast and if they are comfortable in their plant, their roots need room to grow. Once repotted, this space and the new potting soil will encourage growth and prevent root suffocation. In addition, old potting soil is more susceptible to diseases and you have to water less often because you can give more water in 1x!

When can we repot?

When the spring fever is approaching, you know: you can repot! You can repot your plants all year round, but we recommend not doing this in winter. The growth period of your amigos will start from spring and then they can deal with major changes such as moving to a different pot.

A new plant

If you have just ordered a new amigo, we recommend that you leave it in its breeding pot for a while. This is because it has holes where the excess water runs out so that your roots do not drown. In addition, it is more pleasant for your plant to get used to its new living environment before radical relocations take place.

Repotting to a pot with a water hole

Some pots have a hole at the bottom through which water can drain if overwatered. This is useful, otherwise, this excess water will remain at the bottom of the pot, which can cause the roots to rot. To ensure that your floor does not get soaked, it is necessary to place a saucer under these pots.

Repotting to a pot without a water hole

With pots without a water hole at the bottom, you have more options in styling and shapes. These types of pots are often considered to be more modern, so it does have the disadvantage that the roots of the plant can rot. An intermediate solution is to use a layer of special gravel. You then place the plant on top of this layer, so that the roots above do not drown in too much water.

Repot old plants

Plants that you have had for a while also like it if they are placed in a larger pot with fresh soil every 1 to 2 years. If the roots emerge above the ground or from the bottom of the pot, it is high time to repot to a larger pot. Even if a plant has been sick, it can be good to replace the potting soil so that all diseases that were in the old soil are gone. How quickly it needs to be repotted depends on the growth rate of a plant.
